How to Format External Hard Drive or USB Removable Drive in Mac OS X

If you are a Windows users, Recently switched from Windows. Its really not that much hard to adopt Mac. Just spend a Week with Mac and you will able to do the best with Mac. Now i am writing this tutorial for the people who are really new to Mac. Its not like Windows by just tapping the Right click and selecting Format feature. In Mac you have a separate utility named “Disk Utility” which is loaded with all your needs of your Disk management.

You can get the “Disk Utility” from Applications –> Utilities

Now Plug your External Hard Disk or USB Flash Drive into the Mac. Now it will be listed in the Right Pane of the Disk Utility.

Step 1:  Select your drive which you want to Format.

Step 2:  Click Erase Tab on the Left pane top.

Step 3:  Select the File Format which you want to format your Drive. You can select from the List of formats.

  •  MS-DOS (FAT) : If you are going to Use the Drive in various Operating Systems like Windows, Linux and Mac. Its Globally used format system.
  • Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and Mac OS Extended (Case-Sensitive, Journaled): Select this Formats if you gonna use only in Mac computers. If you select this Option, your drive won’t be detected in other operating systems like Windows.

Step 4: Type the name which you want to keep for your Drive.

Step 5: Click Erase.

Its Done. Now your External hard disk or USB Flash drive is formatted.
