Things You Should Know About Apple’s LiDAR Technology

Apple recently launched a new iPad Pro. This is the first Apple device to feature LiDAR components for VR and AR experiences. So far, LiDAR has been widely used in industries such as massive industry automation, autonomous driving, security, robotics, and drones. Apple’s decision to deploy LiDAR clearly demonstrates that LiDAR has transcended the origins of industrial automation and is close to consumer acceptance.

What is Apple’ LiDAR Technology?

Apple’s first use of LiDAR was presented in the iPad Pro 2020. The method used by this technique is similar to the known facial recognition of Face ID, but it is different in a certain way. After disassembling 2020 iPad Pro, a camera module with a 10-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, a 12-megapixel camera, a LiDAR (light detection and ranging) scanner found in it. LiDAR consists of two modules equipped with stacked lenses. It consists of a transmitter, a VCSEL and a receiver sensor. The first sensor emits a series of dots in the infrared and the sensors detect these points.

Apple’s LiDAR system for 2020 iPad Pro is different from Android. Apple uses a laser beam to scan an entire scene from point to point, instead of Android scanning using the ToF (time-of-flight) method to scan an entire scene with a laser or laser pulse light. Unlike “regular” ToF sensors (which work only at a distance of about 2 meters), this method allows you to scan objects from up to 5 meters away.

Apple considers that LiDAR sensors are handy in augmented reality (AR) experiments. AR is a known technique for superimposing data and virtual objects on scenes in real-time. Compared to Face ID, LiDAR on the Apple 2020 iPad Pro uses point-scanning objects that exceed 2D mode to determine 3D distance. In other words, LiDAR measures explicitly the time it takes for each beam to arrive and reflect, so it’s called ToF and Face ID is refined. Use a more detailed depth map to create a more profound map from somewhere farther away and scan the objects in the 3D model closer to each other.

As stated by Apple, Face ID works by projecting more than 30,000 invisible infrared dots on the face to create a 3D grid. To that end, the technology uses a “real depth camera system” that includes infrared cameras, proximity sensors, searchlights, and dot projectors.

Things You Should Know About Apple’s LiDAR

Environment Changer for App Developers

When LiDAR technology was launched on the iPad, consumers will use it more efficiently than ever. The new iPad was officially launched on March 24. The immediate concern is that consumers will not be able to make full use of LiDAR. For mobile devices, this feature is very new, so developers don’t have to deal with it.

Apple’s long-awaited AR campaign. With the launch of ARKit, this change became especially evident in 2017. ARKit is a software package developed by Apple for application developers. Resources are provided to help and encourage developers to integrate AR into applications.

It Makes Life Stress-free

The benefits of AR for human consumption far outweigh business. Improving our reality can take many forms. American Airlines has partnered with Apple to reduce friction in the airport passenger experience. The AR over technology incorporated into its mobile solutions to allow passengers to navigate airport labyrinths using American Airlines passengers can enter flight information, and the app shows the passenger’s route to the corresponding port. This example is very suitable to demonstrate the multifunctional AR in other areas. The same concept can easily be applied to other public places, shopping centers, amusement parks and university campuses.

Transforming Healthcare Industry

This year, the importance of remote service availability and advertising will increase. The health sector is a rapidly evolving field to take advantage of technological advances to help users access to care, knowledge and information.

We often see that one of the jobs of augmented reality in education. The actual manual test is dangerous. Besides, realistic models are expensive, and some surgeries are so rare that it is difficult to prove the correctness of detailed training. AR is an excellent answer to these questions. AR also helps to eliminate the health conditions of human error. For example, a pharmaceutical company uses AR technology in a device to scan a patient’s skin and find blood vessels. This tool helps to improve accuracy and reduce IV loss.

Approaching To Novel Standards

Experts predict that the functionality of ARKit and LiDAR will be just the tip of the iceberg in Apple’s AR channel. Its predictions include the launch of wearable devices for AR and VR, and LiDAR will appear in future mobile devices that the company will launch, such as the iPhone 12. Like VUI, it is not difficult to imagine that, combining AR with the functional applications, AR can be immediately integrated into daily life.

Wrapping Up

This new technology brings new challenges and new opportunities for application developers that will enable them to develop the next big thing in consumer electronics. We look forward to being one of them!
